Gulf Refining Company (1935)

"Sink 'er there, Pardner!"

“In the early days of the oil industry, prospecting for petroleum smacked strongly of witchcraft. Professional diviners with their forked wands hired themselves out to all comers. And they claimed to be able to tell exactly where to drill to tap Nature's liquid treasure. How often they were wrong is not recorded. But it made little difference. For Nature was prodigal and the demand for oil was lean. Today, drills must bite deep to supply fuels and lubricants for America's 25,000,000 motor vehicles. Errors in locating oil are costly -to the company that drills a well and the man who drives a car. So the Gulf Refining Company has turned to science- with results that would seem like witchcraft to the pioneer. In place of the divining rod, Gulf uses the seismograph and other geophysical instru-ments. They permit the prospectors to visualize conditions deep within the earth's crust. Even with these modern, scientific instruments it may take months of work to find a good area for drilling. But finally - when the drills go down-oil is likely to come up. Such foresight by trained Gulf scientists prevents many a costly mistake. And the savings go into improving Gulf's 654 petroleum products through each manufacturing step. For Gulf believes sincerely in translating its economies into benefits for every customer.”
